Collection policy

At the Ypres Museum, we take an open-minded approach to cultural heritage, which is not just about the past but also colours life in the city and the region today. The cultural heritage of Ypres and the Westhoek region is both tangible and intangible. It consists of objects, images, documents and sounds, but also traditions, rituals and customs. The cultural heritage of a city or region is not static, but in constant flux. For museums, this means that the collection is never complete. Staying alert to what is alive and what was, is and will be important inspires us. Participation is therefore an attitude that permeates the entire operation of the Ypres Museum and, in particular, its collection policy. Together with others, we now want to recognise, collect, research and preserve the cultural heritage of Ypres and the Westhoek.

In addition, maximising the digital sharing of the collection is a fundamental principle to which we are fully committed. In this way, we allow others to share in the museum's story and give meaning to the past, present and future of the heritage of Ypres and the Westhoek region. This attitude determines the entire operation of the museum, which is reflected in its mission and vision, but certainly also in its collection policy.
